When you have children, it's inevitable that you will eventually deal with the subject of lying.
I am pretty sure all kids lie at some point, it's a way of testing to see what they can/can't get away with.
Luckily for me, so far I have only had to deal with the issue once with Xander, he has started lying (well, I call it exaggerating) about things he has seen/heard/done which can be confusing to other kids and adults when he says strange things.
For example, he told Casey a few weeks ago that he and daddy went fishing and caught a big bass and they used a certain kind of hook and bait and he went on and on for quite a while, and Casey was confused because well I tell her EVERYTHING, so she didn't know why I wouldn't have told her that..then I explained that he has been making things up.
We are not totally religious in our house, though we are Christians, and we do go to church and we pray, and my kids know that eventually they will have to answer to someone else.
The book "I Cannot Tell a Lie" is about this:
When Jody breaks her mother's special cookie jar, she feels horrible but is even more afraid of telling the truth. When she studies God's commandment 'Thou shalt not lie' during devotion time, she begins to feel badly about lying, and another Bible story leaves Jody completely conflicted. Will Jody tell the truth or keep her lie quiet? Find out in I Cannot Tell a Lie.
Ruth Thomson has completely captured the feelings I wanted my kids to understand, that lying is hurtful. Whether they intend to hurt or not, it can cause hurt feelings, and I love that in the book the mom and Jody pray for forgiveness and the strength to not tell a lie again.
I would definitely recommend this book for anyone with children, it makes it easier to explain the consequences of lying.
